Here is something we still find quietly impressive: a 40ft reefer container loaded at our facility today will, a few weeks from now, be lifted by a dockside crane on the other side of the world — machinery that has never touched our equipment, operated by a team that has never heard of us. The twist-locks seat into the corner castings. The spreader engages. The box settles into the ship's cell guide as if the two were designed for each other.
They were never introduced. They come from different continents and different manufacturers. Yet they connect perfectly, on the first try, every time.
That is not luck. It is standardisation — the quiet layer of rules that makes a container "work" anywhere on Earth. In this article, we want to walk you through that invisible machinery, and explain why we treat these standards as the floor — never the ceiling — of the quality we ship.
A Box's Journey, Told in Four Rules
1. First, it has to fit — ISO 668
Long before a container can travel anywhere, it must fit everywhere. That single idea is what ISO 668 governs: the external dimensions of the box itself.
A 20ft unit measures 6.058 m in length and 2.438 m in width; a 40ft unit runs 12.192 m long; the high-cube version adds height, standing 2.896 m tall. Whatever else differs between factories, brands or countries of origin, these figures do not move.
The magic number is the width. Because every standard container shares that same 2.438 m footprint, the entire transport ecosystem — truck decks, rail wagons, port cranes, vessel cell guides — has been engineered around one dimension. A box built in our yard can roll onto a truck on another continent and fit as though it were measured for it. That is what "standard" actually buys you: the whole world prepared in advance for your cargo.
2. Then, it has to be lifted — ISO 1161
A container's most elegant secret sits at its eight corners. Each one carries a cast-steel fitting — the corner casting — machined to an identical profile, with openings placed at identical positions.
Why does a hole in a piece of steel deserve its own international standard? Because those eight castings are the only points where a container is ever touched. Every lift, every stack, every lashing on a voyage is transmitted through them. The geometry being identical is what guarantees that a crane in one hemisphere can pick up a box manufactured in another, using nothing more than a standard twist-lock.
Stacking works the same way. Corner castings interlock from box to box, which is how terminals can build stacks many units high without any additional frame — each container literally holding the ones above it. Strength is written into the rulebook too: the fittings must withstand the enormous loads of lifting, stacking and rough weather, year after year.
3. Next, it needs permission to sail — the CSC Safety Plate
Before a container is allowed into international service, it must carry something that is easy to overlook and impossible to do without: the CSC Safety Approval Plate.
The International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) is the mandatory safety framework that governs containers used across borders. Every box must be built to survive the real punishment of ocean transport — the weight of stacked units, the shock of lifting, the forces of a vessel at sea. The plate itself records the box's essential facts: its maximum gross weight, its own tare weight, and when it was manufactured — a small metal identity card that inspectors, terminals and carriers check throughout the container's life.
From our perspective, CSC is the line that separates a container from simply "a big steel box". Without the plate and the design behind it, a unit cannot board a ship, clear a border or enter international trade. It is the industry's way of saying: safety is not optional, and it is not negotiable.
4. Finally, it has to be found — ISO 6346
Somewhere on the door frame of every container sits an eleven-character code. It looks cryptic at first — a trio of letters, a single letter, six digits and a final check digit. In reality, it is a global licence plate.
The letters identify the owner; the digit that follows marks the container type; the six numbers are the unit's unique serial; and the final digit is a mathematically calculated check that catches errors when the code is read or typed by hand. Tap that code into any major tracking system in the world, and the box surfaces — where it was, where it is, where it is going.
This numbering standard is what lets a consignment cross oceans, change hands between a dozen parties, and still be located in seconds. When we hand a customer their container numbers, we are handing them a key that works in every port, on every carrier's platform, in every customs system — with no translation required.
Why This Matters to Someone Buying a Container
If you are new to the industry, all of this can sound like background noise. In our experience, it is exactly the opposite — knowing how the standards work is the best defence a buyer has.
Here is why we say that. Standards tell you the minimum a container must be: the dimensions it must meet, the strength its castings need, the certification it must carry. A compliant container is a passable container. But when your cargo is perishable, hazardous or high-value — or when the box is being customised for a specific job — "passable" is rarely enough.
